If you’re weighing Gravity Forms vs WPForms, you’re not really buying a plugin. You’re choosing an annual licence you’ll renew for the next three years or more, because migrating hundreds of stored entries and rebuilt forms between plugins is miserable enough that almost nobody does it twice.
That changes what matters. The first-year discount matters less than the renewal price. The feature list matters less than which tier your must-have feature sits in. So this comparison runs on year-three cost and add-on gating, with every number checked against both vendors’ live pricing pages on August 8, 2026.
The short version: Gravity Forms is the developer’s tool with cheaper long-run pricing at the top tier. WPForms is the beginner’s tool with a real free version and a friendlier first year. Which one wins depends on who’s holding the keyboard, and we’ll give a verdict per situation, not a single winner.
Gravity Forms vs WPForms pricing: ignore year one, look at year three
The two companies price in opposite styles.
Gravity Forms shows flat prices with no first-year discount: Basic at $59, Pro at $159, Elite at $259 per year. What you see is what you renew at. There’s no free version at all, though there is a 30-day money-back guarantee that also covers renewals and upgrades.
WPForms advertises roughly half off your first year: Basic at $49.50, Plus at $99.50, Pro at $199.50, Elite at $299.50. Then renewals revert to the regular prices of $99, $199, $399, and $599. The guarantee is 14 days.
Here’s what that does over three years on each vendor’s own “recommended” tier:
| Gravity Forms Elite | WPForms Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | $259 | $199.50 |
| Year 2 | $259 | $399 |
| Year 3 | $259 | $399 |
| Three-year total | $777 | $997.50 |
| Sites covered | Unlimited | 5 |
WPForms looks cheaper on the pricing page and costs about $220 more by year three, on fewer sites. If you want WPForms Elite for unlimited sites and webhooks, the three-year total climbs to $1,497.50, nearly double Gravity Forms Elite. One caveat for fairness: Gravity Forms runs occasional sales, and licences bought on sale renew at the regular price, so the flat numbers above are the honest planning baseline for both.

The free version: WPForms wins, with an asterisk
Gravity Forms has no free version and no trial you can install; you get docs and an online demo before paying. WPForms Lite is a genuinely usable free plugin: drag-and-drop builder, 2,000+ templates, spam protection, and even Stripe payments (with that 3% fee).
The asterisk is entry storage. On Lite, submissions arrive by email only; they are not stored as browsable entries in your WordPress database. WPForms’ “Lite Connect” holds submissions in WPForms’ own cloud so you can restore them if you later upgrade to a paid tier. If the entire reason you want a WordPress form plugin is entries living in your own database, Lite doesn’t deliver that. Any paid WPForms tier does, and every Gravity Forms licence does.
Add-on gating: where your must-have feature actually sits
This is where most buyers get surprised, in both directions.
Payments. WPForms puts Stripe, Square, and PayPal on every tier including Lite, but adds a 3% platform fee on top of processor fees until you reach Pro. Collect $10,000 through forms on WPForms Basic and you’ve paid $300 extra, more than the licence itself. Gravity Forms gates Stripe and Square behind Pro ($159) and PayPal Checkout behind Elite, but charges no platform fee on any tier. Light payment volume favors WPForms; real payment volume favors Gravity Forms Pro or WPForms Pro, either of which kills the fee problem.
Surveys and conversational forms. WPForms includes both at Pro. Gravity Forms makes you go all the way to Elite ($259) for its Survey, Polls, and Conversational Forms add-ons. If surveys are the job, WPForms gets you there $60 a year cheaper in renewal terms, or you should just use a dedicated survey tool.
Webhooks and CRM. Both vendors treat webhooks as an enterprise feature: Elite only, on both. Salesforce is Elite-only on both too. Oddly, HubSpot is one of Gravity Forms’ Basic-tier add-ons while WPForms holds it for Elite, so a HubSpot shop gets a much cheaper path through Gravity Forms Basic.
Developer surface. Not an add-on, but the real divide. Gravity Forms has spent 15+ years as the plugin developers extend: hooks, filters, a REST API, and a large third-party add-on ecosystem (Gravity Flow, GravityKit, Gravity Wiz) that has no WPForms equivalent at the same depth. WPForms has spent those years polishing onboarding for people who never want to see a filter. Both succeeded.
Gravity Forms or WPForms: where each one wins
Gravity Forms wins on long-run cost at the everything-unlocked tier, unlimited sites at $259, no payment platform fees, the developer ecosystem, and the longer 30-day guarantee.
WPForms wins on the free version, the first-year price, ease of use for non-developers, marketing integrations arriving a tier earlier (Plus, at $199 renewal, versus hunting through Gravity Forms tiers), and surveys landing at Pro instead of Elite.
What switching between them actually costs
Worth knowing before you commit, and before you assume you can change your mind cheaply later. There’s no official migration path in either direction. Forms get rebuilt by hand in the new builder, and any custom code hooked into Gravity Forms’ filters has to be rewritten or abandoned. Entries are the harder part: both plugins export to CSV, but imported history won’t sit in the new plugin’s native entry tables without a third-party import add-on, so most people end up keeping the old plugin’s data in a spreadsheet graveyard.
Confirmation emails, payment feeds, and marketing integrations all need reconnecting and retesting too. Budget a day for a simple site and much more for one with logic-heavy forms. This lock-in is exactly why the renewal price deserves more attention than the promo price.
Verdicts by situation
- Agency or freelancer managing many client sites: Gravity Forms Elite. Unlimited sites at $259 a year flat is the best licence value in this comparison, and clients inherit a plugin any WordPress developer can extend.
- Single small-business site, no developer: WPForms. Start on Lite to learn the builder, upgrade to Basic or Pro when you need entries in your database. The first year is cheap and the UX will never fight you.
- Selling through your forms: either tool at its Pro tier, chosen by who’s maintaining the site. Below Pro, WPForms’ 3% fee quietly becomes your biggest cost.
- Survey-heavy use: WPForms Pro, or honestly a dedicated survey tool instead of a WordPress plugin.

The third option: skip the licence entirely
There’s a case neither plugin serves best: you have a WordPress site, but you don’t need entries stored inside WordPress, and you’d rather not pay an annual licence or maintain another plugin.
We should be direct about the boundary. Fomr is not a WordPress plugin. It never touches your WP database, so if compliance or workflow requires entries in WordPress, both Gravity Forms and WPForms beat us, and you should pick from the verdicts above.
But if a form on the page is the actual goal, you can embed a Fomr form with a small script tag in under a minute, and the free plan has no caps on forms, responses, or team members. Renewal price: $0, forever, because there’s no licence to renew. Design control (1,700+ fonts, full theming) exceeds what either plugin’s styling options offer, and you can build a form without even creating an account. The gaps: conditional logic and payments are still coming soon, two things both plugins do today at their paid tiers.
Bottom line
Price the renewal, not the promo. Over three years, Gravity Forms Elite at $777 undercuts WPForms Pro at $997.50 while covering unlimited sites, which makes it the stronger licence for anyone technical or managing multiple sites. WPForms earns its price for solo site owners who value the gentler learning curve and a free on-ramp. And if you never needed WordPress-native entries in the first place, try Fomr free and put that $259 a year back in your pocket.
