Survey Question Generator

Describe what your survey is about and get well-written, unbiased questions in seconds. Then turn them into a live survey in one click.

How the survey question generator works

Tell the generator what you want to learn — "customer satisfaction for an online store", "employee engagement for a remote team", "feedback after a workshop" — and it drafts a complete set of survey questions for that topic. It mixes question types the way a survey methodologist would: rating scales for measurable attitudes, multiple choice for categories, a 0-10 scale where an NPS-style question fits, and one or two open-ended questions at the end for the "why".

Every question is written to be neutral and specific. No leading questions ("How much do you love our amazing support?"), no double-barreled questions ("How satisfied are you with our price and quality?"), and no jargon your respondents wouldn't use. You can remove any question you don't need before using the list.

From question list to live survey in one click

Most question generators stop at a list you have to copy into a survey tool by hand, rebuilding every question and answer option field by field. Here, the "Create this survey in one click" button does that work for you: Fomr's AI turns your exact questions into a working survey — right field types, answer options filled in, a matching theme — and opens it in the form editor, no account required. Adjust anything you like, then publish and start collecting responses.

What makes a good survey question?

Whether you use the generator or write your own, the same rules apply:

  • Ask about one thing at a time. "How satisfied are you with our delivery speed?" beats "How satisfied are you with our delivery and packaging?" — if someone is happy with one but not the other, their answer is meaningless.
  • Stay neutral. "What did you think of the event?" invites honest answers. "How great was the event?" doesn't.
  • Use balanced scales. A 1-5 satisfaction scale should have as many negative options as positive ones, with a neutral midpoint.
  • Put easy questions first. Start with quick ratings and multiple choice, and leave open-ended questions for the end — respondents who have already invested a minute are far more likely to finish. Our guide on increasing response rates covers this in depth.
  • Keep it short. Every question you add lowers your completion rate. If you won't act on the answer, cut the question.

Survey question types, explained

Type Best for Example
Rating (1-5) Satisfaction, quality, ease of use "How satisfied are you with the checkout process?"
Scale (0-10) Loyalty and likelihood (NPS-style) "How likely are you to recommend us to a friend?"
Multiple choice Categories, preferences, demographics "How did you hear about us?"
Yes / No Screening and clear-cut facts "Did you contact our support in the last month?"
Open-ended The "why" behind the numbers "What is the one thing we could do better?"

A good survey uses mostly closed questions (fast to answer, easy to analyze) with one or two open-ended ones. If you're scoring loyalty, you can calculate the result with our NPS calculator; for satisfaction scores, use the CSAT calculator.

Before you send your survey

Two quick checks save a lot of regret. First, make sure you'll reach enough people: our sample size calculator tells you how many responses you need for results you can trust. Second, pilot the survey with two or three colleagues — if anyone hesitates on a question, respondents will too. When you're ready, our guide on creating a survey from scratch covers distribution, timing, and analysis.

Survey question generator: common questions

How does the survey question generator work?

Describe your topic in plain language and AI drafts a complete set of 8-10 survey questions: rating scales, multiple choice with answer options, a 0-10 loyalty scale where it fits, and one or two open-ended questions. Every question is written to be neutral and single-purpose — no leading or double-barreled questions. You can remove questions you don't need before copying the list or turning it into a live survey.

Is the question generator really free?

Yes. Generating questions is free and doesn't require an account. If you turn your questions into a live form, that's free too — Fomr's free plan includes unlimited forms and unlimited responses, with no trial period or credit card.

What happens when I click "Create in one click"?

Fomr's AI takes your exact questions — including answer options — and builds a working form from them: the right field type for each question, a matching visual theme, and a thank-you page. It opens in the form editor where you can tweak anything, preview it, and publish. No account is needed until you're ready to publish and collect responses.

Will the generated questions be unbiased?

The generator is instructed to follow survey-methodology best practices: one topic per question, neutral wording, balanced scales, and answer options that don't overlap. That said, you know your audience best — always review the list, remove anything irrelevant, and pilot the survey with a couple of colleagues before sending it out.

Can I edit the questions after generating them?

Yes. You can remove individual questions from the list before creating your survey, and once the survey opens in the Fomr editor you can rewrite question text, change field types, reorder questions, add new ones, and restyle the whole form.

Is Fomr free to use?

Yes, Fomr has a free plan that includes unlimited forms, unlimited responses, unlimited team members, 25+ form components, design customization, email notifications, and more. The Pro plan adds features like custom domains, removal of Fomr branding, and SEO controls.
