Answer piping lets you insert a respondent’s earlier answer into later text. For example, after someone enters their name on page one, a later page can say, “Thanks, Sam.”
Use answer piping when a form should feel personal, confirm a detail, or carry context forward without asking the same question twice.
Where you can use answer pipes
Section titled “Where you can use answer pipes”You can insert answer pipes in supported editable text, including:
- Question labels and descriptions
- Text blocks
- Choice labels
- Placeholders
- Thank you messages

Only answers from earlier pages are available in the menu. This keeps published forms predictable, because a question cannot refer to an answer the respondent has not reached yet.
Supported answer sources
Section titled “Supported answer sources”Most text, number, choice, rating, date, and time questions can be used as answer sources.
Multiple-select choice questions are not available as answer sources yet. If a question is not available in the @ menu, move it to an earlier page or use a supported question type.
Fallback text
Section titled “Fallback text”A pipe can be empty when a respondent skips an optional question. Click the pipe token in the editor to add Fallback value text. Fomr shows the fallback when the answer is missing.
For example, a thank you message can say “Thanks, friend” when the respondent leaves their name blank.
Publishing checks
Section titled “Publishing checks”Fomr checks answer pipes when you publish. If a pipe points to a deleted question, an unsupported question type, or a question on the same or a later page, publishing shows an issue so you can fix it before respondents see the form.
